I seem to have done a lot of knitting this year; my (huge) reading shawl, a few pairs of socks, and a cowl, and I was feeling a little bit ‘over’ knitting. So, I decided that July would be a knit-free month and that I would focus on crochet, in particular, my Bedroom Chair Blanket.

The start …

According to my Knitting Journal, I started the blanket for the chair in my bedroom on 8 June 2025, and it’s been slow going. 

For the yarn I started with two Value Packs of 8 ply wool from Spotlight. Each pack was the same with two balls of a variegated yarn and three contrasting colours. However, it turned out that it wasn’t enough yarn to make the blanket in the size wanted, so I added a couple of extra balls which also added more colours to the mix.

The plan was to make a blanket of four-round granny squares in each colour, joined together with a cream yarn to ‘live’ on the armchair in my bedroom where I love to set in the evenings to read. That’s where the name Bedroom Chair originated!

Every now and then, I would bring it out with enthusiasm and crochet more squares and then return it to its basket until the next burst of inspiration. I started joining the squares together in February and by the end of June I had only two rows to go. That’s why, I decided that July would be a good time for one final push to get the blanket finished.

The Finish …

I’m pleased and relieved to say that the blanket was finished on 24 July 2026!

While crocheting the squares together, I mulled over different options for a border wondering if I should use a single or multiple colours, and how wide to make it.  In the end I settled on two rows of cream yarn, and I’m pleased with how it turned out.

Much to my delight, I had only the smallest amount of the cream left and none of the other colours. All of the yarn used is wool (no acrylic) making the blanket quite heavy.

The finished size is 40” (w) x 50” (l).

P.S. Turned out to be perfect timing because the weather in the Capital has been quite cold lately, and I’m enjoying snuggling under my blanket in the chilly evenings.

God’s Long-Term Project …

How would you define a long-term craft project? One with no definite finish date, or one that started out as a short-term project but became a long-term project because it remained unfinished for so long?  For me, it can be either but, in both cases, the project is always at the back of my mind and occasionally I will take it out of its hiding place with a renewed hope of finishing it.  

The moment I put my faith in Jesus Christ as my Lord and Saviour, God started to fulfill His purpose in my life, to be conformed to the likeness of His Son.  I effectively became His long-term project. But unlike my long-term projects, He works in my life, every day. I’m not at the back of His mind, but at the forefront; He has never forgotten me or set me aside to work on another project. He always completes what He starts.

“Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it in on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”  (Philippians 1: 6)
