Summer of Stitching

For the past couple of years, the Bakery Bears podcast has hosted a Summer of Stitching for patrons over the northern Summer.  It includes at least one knitting and one sewing project. I love to participate and, in the past, I’ve sewn project bags, cross-stitched, embroidered, and knit socks, and mitts. Each year there’s a theme and the projects are chosen to match the theme. One year it was Jane Austen, and we knit fingerless mitts and matching cowl and made a drawstring project bag. Another year it was a beach theme, and we cross-stitched a design that was pieced into a zipper project bag.

The theme of Summer of Stitching 2026 which launched this week, is Mary Poppins and includes two pairs of socks and a project bag.

Ready to start…

I’m all ready to get started and have gathered my supplies: two skeins of sock yarn and some Mary Poppins themed fabric for the project bag.

mary poppins fabric and yarn

The pink yarn is Ballerina Pink (80% wool, 20% nylon) from Bumble Bee yarns, located in the Southern Highlands (NSW) and the purple (75% wool, 25% nylon) is from my favourite local Canberra dyer, Sockworthy.

I chose the yarns before I saw the designs, so I may change my mind later but there is no doubt about the fabric, though, it’s perfect!

I’m looking forward to getting started.

Ambassadors…

I live in Canberra the National Capital of Australia. Here, the Australian Government meets in Parliament House, there are National Institutions like the High Court, and the War Memorial, and foreign countries have established Embassies.

Most of the Embassies are built in an architectural style reflective of their country so that from the outside there is no doubt who they represent, and it’s the place where the country’s ambassador lives. The Ambassador’s only mission is to represent the interests of their country to our government in every sphere; they always reflect their country in a favourable light in all they say and do.

2Cor 5:20 says: “We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us.”

In the same way as an ambassador is appointed to represent his country, God has appointed us to represent Him to a broken world, and the Bible says that we should “…conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel.” (Php 1:27) so that, just like an Embassy, our lives are reflective of the Lord.

Also, In Canberra, when an ambassador is in residence, the embassy flies its flag. We don’t need to fly a flag; Jesus said, we are “…the light of the world.” (Matt 5:14) and to “…let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matt 5:16)

We can let the light of Jesus shine through our lives, letting people know that Christ dwells in us, and draw people to Him, the Saviour of the World.

Until next time

Lyn
